Camden Town was a bit of a surprise. When you get off the underground and come to the surface, you may think Camden Town is run down and a b it sketchy. In reality, it is an older part of town, but has a vibrant artistic side and is known for its street markets, music and shops. The Camden Market is a cool area of small, mostly independent shops and eateries that is a must-see and do when you go there. It stretches across the street in two sections, where it follows along a canal and it is here you will find 3 Locks Brewing. We were there very early as my son was looking for anime merch, which the area is full of and even though I had searched ahead of time, I really didn't look where the brewery was exactly. We kind of stumbled upon it a few minutes before they opened. Their taproom over looks the canal and has outside seating along it. It really is a great setting for a brewery. As you can see, I took a terribly blurry picture, so no, you aren't drunk. Are you?
I waited patiently for them to open and then sprung to action once the doors were open. I sound desperate, don't I? It was pretty early and we had plans so I had only time for one beer. Of course, I went for my stand-by, damn you stand-by!! I struggle so much with wanting to try a beer I know I'm going to like rather than diving into the unknown. With only one beer in the offing, I had to have the Dark Mild. It was spectacular. First tap of the day, dark, frothy, malty and carmely. That's not even a word. The alcohol content was very low at just 3.4% and since I didn't read anything about the beer before I had it, it was missing the British yeast taste I love so much, but it didn't matter. It was chilly that morning and the dark flavorful beer was excellent. It made me wonder why I don't drink beer for breakfast more often. I actually had that thought. Weird. I haven't had a beer in the morning since college probably. Ok, it was 11am, but it felt earlier since there were very few people milling around and all the shops were just opening. The metered bitterness made it easy to drink and I liked it a lot. In fact, I utterly regret not staying for more because they had at least 5 other beers in their stable I wanted to have. It is made with the Apollo hop, which is an American hop, quite expensive and has a sharp bittering profile to it. It worked with this beer. Yum.
3 Locks Brewing Company should be on the agenda when going to Camden Town.
